Brown - Locke's Cove, Kittery, Maine

Called Oak Bank or Locke's Cove, this inlet near the "back gate" of the Shipyard was the home of the Brown family for several generations. Their home (the yellow house just over the dock in the above postcard) was said to have been built in 1794. I don't have enough information on hand to say when it first came into the Brown family, but the 1872 map of Kittery shows it in the possession of "E Brown", who was Elihu Deering Brown. His son, my 3rd great-grandfather Joseph William Brown, would later own it. In 1900, my great-grandmother and her sisters moved here with their mother, when she was separated from her husband. When Joseph W Brown died in 1923, he willed this property to his daughter May F Brown, who lived there until the 1950's.

(at right) From the 2013 Kittery tax maps, #24 is the former Brown property, with .35 of an acre.

Not my line, but someone I'm helping out with their research. I noticed on your BROWN page, a picture showing the KRAMER girls. The Kramer line is how my friend connects to the Browns, and back to the Fernalds, among others. I was wondering if you have a higher resolution picture of the KRAMER girls, and if you happen to know which is which, in the picture.

Hi Jared,
I wish I did have a higher res copy of that photo. I turned on the lightbox option, but it didn't make it much larger. I received several Kramer photos from a relative, but they were all scanned with a low res. I may have printed pictures of these relatives and, if so, will try and make a page for them. I also have some on an old cd that I will take a look at.

I live in Watertown Ma. I have a 100 year + model of the priv ateer Harlequin commanded by Capt. Elihu Brown. It has been in my family over 100 yrs. Wondered if any of Captain Browns descendants would be interested in viewing it.

I have an 1843 portrait of 'Miss Angelina Browne of Kittery, Maine', showing as quite a beauty and aged about 30. I am wondering if anyone has an ancestor of this name who was born circa 1810. Thanks, Anthony.
