Elihu Fernald - Kittery, Maine

3/30/2014

My 5th Great-Grandfather ELIHU FERNALD (1763-1851) seems to have been a lifelong resident of Kittery, Maine, seen in all the census records from 1790 to 1850, living there. The "Old Kittery and Her Families" book says he was a carpenter, and had thirteen children.

I have yet to look up real estate transactions concerning Elihu, but it seems that he sold his property to son Elihu Jr prior to 1847. Elihu Jr, in his will, wrote that his father had the right to live in his Kittery home, as would sister Olive Locke, so long as she took care of their father. Junior had already moved to Portsmouth, NH by this time, and had owned a house on Bow St.

In York County Probate, widow Margaret Fernald filed Elihu Jr's will, and an appraisal of his Kittery property was taken in 1856 (submitted in Nov). It contained:
"a certain lot of field and pasture land, with dwelling house and barn thereon containing about 34 acres, situated on the main road leading from Traips Corner to Kittery Point Bridge, known as homestead of Elihu Fernald, dec'd."

Below is the 1850 census, showing Elihu (Sr) living with his daughter Olive and her family.
Picture

Several children of Elihu and Hannah (Chandler) died young, but are not seen in the Orchard Grove Cemetery plot. I don't believe this cemetery had even been started at this time, so they may have been buried in a family plot on their homestead.
Elihu Fernald death notice
from the NH Gazette, 9 Dec 1851, pg 3

On Elihu Fernald Sr's grave, his death date is inscribed as "4 Dec 1857". The seven is an error, as stone also shows his age at death as 88 yrs, which collaborates with his 1763 birth date, recorded in the town's records.

Mary Ann Riley - Canada and Portsmouth, NH

MARY ANN RILEY was said to have been born in Quebec, Canada around 1842. She was first seen in 1857, on the Portsmouth, NH street directory, at 1 Sudbury St. This was the home of Mrs Clara Johnson, the widow of Joshua. It was perhaps a boarding house, looking at the numerous people living there in 1850 census.
Picture
1857 Portsmouth, NH Street Directory
Soon after this, on 6 Nov 1857 in Portsmouth, NH, she married Charles W Leavitt. No data, such as birthplace or names of parents, were listed on the marriage record.

In Arthur Locke's "Portsmouth and Newcastle Cemetery Inscriptions" book (1907), it shows, buried in North Cemetery:
LEAVITT, Chas W and Mary A, had:
Lizzie A, d. Nov. 15 1859, a. 15m.-10d.
Charlie, d. July 24, 1860.

The gravestone (at right) is no longer readable below Charlie's name, which must be where their parents names are inscribed. These are the only Leavitt names in this cemetery.

1860 Portsmouth Ward-1, NH census
In the 1860 street directory, Charles W (a carpenter), was listed at 2 Wendell St. The above census entry for 1860, taken on 11 June, shows the household with no children. Eliza (aka Lizzie) had already passed by this time, and son Charlie probably was born after this date, only to die within a month. Note that she is listed as age 25 on this record (so born ca 1835), though records after this seem to indicate an 1842 date. No age was listed for her when she first married.

During the Civil War, Charles W Leavitt would enlist from Portsmouth on 18 Sept 1862, to serve with the 16th New Hampshire Infantry, a nine-month regiment. He was mustered out on 20 Aug 1863. The following year, it seems that he and Mary had split up, as she is seen in the Portsmouth 1864 street directory living at 27 Washington St, while he was boarding at 9 1/2 Cabot St. Charles would last be seen in the 1865 and '66 tax lists for the city. His parents having moved west (to Oshkosh, Wisconsin) at this time, he shortly followed them. No divorce record has yet been found for Charles and Mary, but both remarried in 1866 (Charles, of OshKosh, married Annie Keenan, in Exeter, NH on 2 Oct; Mary had married John H Dow in July).
Picture

What became of Mary following the 1870 census is unknown. John H Dow would remarry in 1875, but record does not say if he was a widower or had been divorced.

GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY OF MARY ANN (RILEY) LEAVITT DOW

MARY ANN RILEY, the daughter of George and Lizzie Riley, was perhaps born in Quebec, Canada about 1842 [age 24 on 1866 marr rec; age 28 in 1870 census]. Her death date is unknown, but took place after the 1870 census. She married first, on 6 Nov 1857 in Portsmouth, NH, to CHARLES W LEAVITT. He was born in Bath or Portland, ME, the son of Daniel C and Martha W (Morton) Leavitt. He died 9 July 1915, and was buried in the Dayton, Ohio National Cemetery. She secondly married, on 29 July 1866 in Newington, NH, to JOHN T H DOW. The son of John T and Martha Ann (Locke or Lake) Dow, he was born in Newington, NH ca 1841, and died in Hampton, NH on 12 Apr 1904.

By her first husb, Charles Leavitt:
i. ELIZA "LIZZIE" ADELAIDE LEAVITT, b. abt Aug 1858; d. 15 Nov 1859 in Portsmouth, NH from whooping cough

ii. CHARLIE LEAVITT, b.unk, maybe after June 1860; d. 24 July 1860, perhaps in Portsmouth

Mary had two children by 2nd husb. John Dow:
i. IDA MAY DOW, b. abt 1868 (age 2 in 1870) in Portsmouth, NH; died 24 Nov 1960 in Hampton, NH. She married, on 25 Dec 1886 in Greenland, NH, to GEORGE H ROGHASKIE. They had two daughters. She had a son in 1885, George W Dow, with George Wescott, but he died at age 2 months.

ii. JOHN TAYLOR DOW, b. 8 Nov 1869 in Portsmouth, NH; d. 25 July 1942 in Portsmouth, NH. He was married to DOROTHY M YEATON, on 14 Sept 1889. They had nine children.

Waldron - Ireland and Gloucester, MA

My third great grandfather Dennis Hessian was married to Mary Waldron on 25 Nov 1852 in Boston, Massachusetts. She was living there at the time, and he was already a resident of Gloucester, where they would make their home. The marriage record did not list her parents.
Picture
From the 1855 Massachusetts state census, the Hessian family is seen in Gloucester, with a Waldron family living with them. After looking into Thomas' background, it is now known that this is Mary's brother.
Picture
1855 Gloucester, MA census
On 14 Sept 1857, four days after giving birth to twins, Mary passed away from an inflammation of the bowels. She was only 32 years old. Her death record would list her parents as Matthew and Ellen "Waldon", and listed her birth place as "Lanby, Ireland". In 1855, her daughter Ellen's birth record had listed the birth place as Killham, Ire, while the birth rec of daughter Mary gave Limerick, Ireland as her place of birth.

Researching into the other Waldron families of Gloucester, I found there were three other Irish-born immigrants who also had Matthew and Ellen Waldron as their parents. Two of them would list their mother as a Mahoney, and all would claim Limerick, Ireland as their birth place.
Picture
Lanby, unless first letter is an 'S' or even a 'T'. None are a match to any town in County Limerick
Picture
"Bruff, Ire" and "Killham, Ire", from the birth rec of Ellen "Heshan". Bruff is in County Limerick, but no town named Killham was found. There was a Kilflyn and a couple of other similar sounding ones.
I have checked numerous entries on passenger lists of Irish immigrants coming into Boston and New York, but have yet to find anything to give me a date of entry into this country. I was hoping they all arrived here at the same time, and would find them together on a ship's manifest, but that would have been too easy!

[3/23/14 UPDATE: Looking at the actual naturalization applications, I found that Matthew Waldron arrived in Boston on 10 June 1851, and Thomas did so on 6 Aug 1850. Neither date exactly matched that of a passenger list, but dates are close. It looks like they didn't come over with any family members.]

Below is what I have gathered so far on the four siblings who made their home in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Condons of Creek St (Portsmouth, NH)

John Condon arrived in Boston, Massachusetts on the 11th of July 1851, when a minor of about 16 years of age. He was a resident of Portsmouth, NH by Oct 1866, when he applied for naturalization, and was sworn in as a US citizen on 26 Nov 1866, aged 32. He lived in Portsmouth, NH until early 1870, when he moved to Lawrence, MA, but returned within a couple of years. From 1873 until his death eleven years later, he lived on the corner of Bartlett (formerly Creek) and Islington Streets. The building he rented was divided in two, with half being the family's residence, the other used first as a variety store, and later a saloon. Called the "Condon House" at one point, there were also rooms for rent. Unfortunately, the building was torn down some time after 1956. The only photo I have found of the building was a partial glimpse of it in this image taken from the Frank Jones clock tower. It can be seen in lower left side of photo (with white pipe on roof), just above a Brewery building.

For the longest time, I never knew his whereabouts between the time he arrived in the US in 1851 and his 1868 second marriage. Now, with near certainty, I believe he was first married to a Mary Sullivan in Lowell, MA, on 22 June 1856. They probably had a son John Condon born 3 June 1857 in Lowell, MA, which would have been the John Jr who was seen in Portsmouth in 1883 and 1884, just prior to his father's passing. John Jr's 1873 navy enlistment listed his birth place as Portsmouth, NH, as did his 1893 death record. John Jr had been sent away to a reform school when a minor, and was released in 1872, the Portsmouth Journal reporting him "of this city". What became of John Sr's wife Mary is unknown, but presumably she had passed prior to 1868.

At left is the Condon/Mulligan plot in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. Church records do not show if John and Ellen are actually buried here, and there are no head stones (unless covered) for them. With these two surnames sharing a plot, it is likely they are here with daughter Margaret Mulligan.

Hessian - Gloucester, Massachusetts

The Hessian Family of Gloucester, Massachusetts

Numerous variations of the Hessian surname are found in the town records, including Hassen, Hessan, Heshan, Hasen, Hisoun, Hushin, Hushing, Huson, etc.

Dennis "Hushin" is first seen in the US in the 1850 Gloucester, MA census, a fisherman aged 22. He married in 1852, and on 24 Oct 1856, had completed the process of becoming a naturalized citizen. In Sept of 1857, his first wife died only four days after giving birth to twins, one of them stillborn. He would remarry a year and a half later, his second wife having four children.

Dennis Hessian and 11 other crew members of the schooner Victor left port on 3 March 1882, headed for George's Bank. A large fleet of fishing vessels were located there when a gale struck them on St Patrick's Day. One by one, the battered ships returned to Gloucester, and gave their reports on the terrible storm. By April, only two schooners had not returned, the Victor and the Northerner. Now 6 weeks overdue, they were officially reported as lost on 11 April.
