My Great-Grandmother, Annie F (Knight) Smith. She was born in Newington, NH on 27 Apr 1886, the second child born of English immigrants John and Emily Alice (Adams) Knight. She lived with her family in Newington, where they rented a farm out on Fox Point until 1906, when they moved to Portsmouth. They leased the Gee Pickering farm off of Woodbury Ave for a few years, until buying a farm on Gosling Road. She would have a daughter, Florence, in 1915, and continued to live on the family farm until she married William H Smith in 1921. They rented a house on Maplewood Ave, next to the North Mill Pond. They would have three children together. |
On the evening of January 29th, around 6 PM, Annie was walking towards her home on Maplewood Ave when she was struck by a vehicle driven by Sven Hanson of Dover. The newspaper report said he was heading into the city, so he had come up behind her as she was walking, and did not see her in the road. This was in front of 832 Maplewood, the home of Henry Paul, where she was carried to before passing away. Her death record says she was placed in the Newington tomb, as it was winter. Family relatives say she was later buried in the family plot in the Newington Cemetery. Most of the family, including her parents, have no stones here in the Knight plot (pictured below). Her two sisters that died when young have a stone, as does her brother William, but it is a modern one placed there by his descendants.
