My 3rd Great-Grandmother, EMILY AUGUSTA (WAITT) BROWN was born in Malden, Massachusetts, the daughter of Oliver and Hannah (Elms) Waitt. She died in Kittery, Maine on 17 Jan 1919, and was buried in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery [ME vr; obit].

She was married, on 29 July 1863 in Malden, MA [MA vr], to JAMES WILLIAM BROWN of Kittery, who had just returned from serving in the Civil War with the 27th Maine Infantry. They had one son and four daughters, while living in Malden, MA and Kittery, Maine.

James Shattuck, of Pepperell, MA and Solon, Maine

JAMES SHATTUCK, my 6th Great-Grandfather, was born in Pepperell, Massachusetts on 6 June 1763, the son of James Sr and Phebe (Tucker) Shattuck. He died on 14 Aug 1830, aged 66 yrs, 2 mos, and is buried in the Jewett Cemetery in Madison, Maine.

He was first married to Sybil Tarbell, on 7 Sept 1784 in Pepperell, MA. She died on 27 Jun 1804, and he remarried her sister Amy on 1 Dec 1804. They were the daughters of David and Bathsheba (Woods) Tarbell. I believe "Emma", the name of his wife buried beside him, is probably an alternate spelling for Amy, his second wife.

Some time following the 1810 Pepperell, Mass census, he left for Maine, and settled in the town of Solon.

Though I currently don't have his earliest land deed in my notes to establish an exact time of arrival in town, on 7 July 1818 [Somerset County Deed, v.9 p.30], he did sell 125 acres in Solon for $500. to a Joseph Tarble of Norridgewock, "where I now live and bought of Joseph Heald". One of the properties Mr Heald had purchased in 1804 [Kennebec Deeds, v.3 p.165] was lot #39, which was the same land that James' son Lovell Shattuck lived on years later. [NOTE: There are quit claim deeds involving his widow and others, so I will edit this entry after I gather more data from the Registry of Deeds.]

Hannah B Steward, aka Alberta Ann Rowell

My 2nd Great-Grandmother was born HANNAH B STEWARD, the daughter of Thomas and Catharine (Young) Steward, on 19 Feb 1872 [adoption papers; age at death calculates to a birth of 2/27] in Skowhegan or Solon, Maine. She was the sixth of seven children born to Thomas and Kate, and the family was living in Athens, Maine when their mother died on 13 July 1875. Unable to care for all of his children, Thomas gave Hannah up for adoption. Luther and Lovisa Rowell of Solon petitioned the Somerset County court on 23 Oct 1875, with Thomas Steward signing over his rights. Hannah's name was subsequently changed to ALBERTA ANN ROWELL (she was listed as Annie A on the 1880 census).

She was married on 2 Sept 1890 in Solon to Charles Frank Leavitt, and they had five children: Fred, Irving, Forrest, Gladys, and Alberta A.

Still in the hospital after giving birth on the 9th, Alberta died from puerperal fever on 13 Sept 1901 in Skowhegan, aged 29 years, 6 mos, 17 das (her newborn daughter would also pass away, 5 days later). She was buried in the South Solon Cemetery and, for many years, had only a wooden cross as a grave marker. In recent years, members of my family purchased a stone for her (and now we have a third birth date for Hannah/Alberta!).

The 1880 census for Solon, Maine (pg 20) shows the former Hannah Steward, now Alberta A (or Annie A) Rowell, with adoptive parents.

An image from the 1900 census for Norridgewock, Somerset, Maine (pg 9A), showing the family of Charles and Alberta Leavitt (the children number is wrong, as they had another son, Irving, who died young).

Sadly, similar to what happened to Hannah/Alberta, the widowed Charles Leavitt couldn't care for his family, and left young daughter Gladys in the care of others, including her grandfather, Joseph Leavitt of Solon. In 1907, she would be adopted by Amos and Katie Clarke, and took their surname.
