Below is the family record of my 5th Great-Grandparents, LOVELL and SARAH (WYMAN) SHATTUCK, found in the Solon, Somerset, Maine Vital Records on pg 49 [from microfilm, digitized on Family Search].
Picture
Lovell was born in Pepperell, MA on 13 Jan 1807. He and Sarah Wyman married in Solon on 16 March 1826. He is found in the Solon, Maine censuses, 1830-1870.
Picture
(left) From a map of Somerset County in 1860, the homes of Lovell Shattuck and Joseph Brown (and wife Lucy, Lovell's daughter). According to the 1860 Agriculture Schedule, he had 10 acres of improved land, and 3 unimproved, with a $500. value. A decade earlier, he had 40/30.

Having lost a court case, he sold this land in South Solon and moved to the village. He had a 10 square rod lot on the west side of the country road to Bingham, next to E. Coolidge. He sold this on 30 Apr 1880 [Somerset Cty Deeds, v. 168, pg 91], and is not found on the 1880 census two months later.
Had he died in that two month time frame, he should have been listed in the 1880 Mortality Schedule. I am guessing that he had moved in with relatives after selling off his property, but he has yet to be found. No burial place has been found for him either. Wife Sarah, who died on 6 Sep 1877, has a stone in Solon Village Cemetery, but no other family members are beside her (son Alanson does have a plot a short distance away).

During the Civil War, Lovell signed up with sons Alphonso and Josiah in Dec. 1861 (son William would do so 3 months later), into what would become Co. I of the 14th Maine Infantry. "Lovel" claimed to be age 44, though he was actually a decade older. He was home sick at the time he was supposed to gather for the medical exams, so never joined. Josiah, who was only 16 at the time, said he was 18, but was rejected. Alphonso was accepted, but died 8 months later from sickness in New Orleans. Below is the enlistment sheet (click on image to enlarge):

In the back of the Solon Village Cemetery and down an embankment stands the stone of Sarah Shattuck, the wife of Lovel. The base in the foreground may be hers, and perhaps her broken stone had been reset where it was found further back.

2020 - two hundred years of statehood for the State of Maine. On the 15th of March, 1820, the former District became the 23rd state in the Union. In August of that year, the 1820 census was taken. Here are my MAINE ancestors, and where they were at the time of statehood.

Jeremiah Brown - 5th Great Grandfather
Cornville, Somerset, Maine
Picture
Jeremiah Brown and Charlotte Lewis were married ca Mar 1820 in Cornville, but it is known that she had two children prior to Oct 1818 (one of them perhaps my 4th GGF Joseph Brown). The household now with 5 children in 1820 census, some may not be their own kin.
More about: The Family of Jeremiah Brown and Charlotte Lewis

Joseph Gray (abt 1787-aft 1874) - 5th Great Grandfather
Newfield, York, Maine
Picture
Married to Betsey Plaisted in Wolfeboro, NH in 1811, they first removed to Newfield, ME, and then went on to Athens, Maine soon after. My 4th GGM Elmira Gray is one of the females under 10 yrs of age - her sister Sarah is another, while a third, and the one in the 16-26 age range, is not known.
More about: Joseph Gray of Athens, Solon, and Brighton, Maine

Philip Levitt (Leavitt) Esq. (1774-1861) - 5th Great Grandfather
Athens, Somerset, Maine
Picture
With wife Mary (Pike) (1774-1826), they had ten children (according to Leavitt records), the numbers above showing several other persons also living with them. Philip was a cooper, and also ran a store and tavern, so is one of the "2" people engage in commerce (far right number), with five family members farming. My 4th GGF, Joseph Leavitt, was not yet 15 at the time of this census.

James Shattuck (1763-1830)
Solon, Somerset, Maine
Picture
Originally from Pepperell, MA, he arrives in Solon, ME between 1810-1820 with his 2nd wife Amy (Tarbell). Son Lovell Shattuck was 13 years old during this census, and is seen in the 10-16 yr column.
More about: James Shattuck of Pepperell MA and Solon Maine

John Steward (1740-aft 1840)-  5th GGF
Canaan, Somerset, Maine
Picture
Born in Lunenburg, MA, he was in Norridgewock, ME by 1787, when he married Abigail Whitcomb. Son Alaxis Steward, my 4th GGF, would have been 7 yrs old at time of this census.
More about: Duncan Stewart of Rowley MA and His Descendants to Maine

Henry Wyman (1762-1837) - 6th Great-Grandfather
Madison, Somerset, Maine
Picture
Henry and wife Sarah (Tuttle) married in Goffstown, NH in 1793, and soon moved to Madison, ME. He was a Rev. War veteran - a large family, though I haven't compiled a list of children yet. 3 persons in household were engaged in agriculture.
More about: Henry Wyman of Madison, Maine

Capt. James Brown (1760-1838)
Kittery, York, Maine
Picture
James Brown, with wife Sarah (Fernald), both 45+ years of age in 1820. One son, Elihu Deering Brown, was almost 20 yrs of age at this time, and would be one of the "2" in the 16-26 column.

Elihu Fernald (1763 - 1851)
Kittery, York, Maine
Picture
Elihu the only male left in the household, with wife Hannah (Chandler) (1765-1836), and three daughters. One those females being my 4th Great-Grandmother Jane C., 16 yrs old in 1820.

A Drive Through Somerset County, Maine

11/19/2019

Though it ended up being a very cold and wet trip, I took time during my vacation in October 2019, and made a day-trip up to Somerset County, Maine, where many of my maternal ancestors had lived and where many of their burial places can still be found.

The first location was about three hours from home, and was the grave of my 5th Great-Grandmother, Abigail (Whitcomb) Steward. I had just recently found out that she was buried in St. Albans, in a plot with her son Randall Steward, so made this one a priority.
Picture

Abigail, wife of John Steward
Died May 7, 1853 AEt 83 yrs

More about her and husband John can be read in a blog post I wrote in Jan 2019, on:

Duncan Stewart of Rowley, MA

Picture
Picture
I went north from here, to visit a Civil War soldier from the 27th Maine, who had settled in Dexter, Maine and was buried there in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. I then traveled southwest to Athens, Maine, making a stop at Mount Rest Cemetery.
Picture
While I probably have direct ancestors buried there, including perhaps my 5th Great-Grandparents, Philip and Mary (Pike) Leavitt (and possibly my 4th Great-Grandparents), there are no stones to mark their resting places. I did photograph all of the Leavitt stones there, some two dozen cousins. I have placed them on a cemetery page at the National Association of Leavitt Families (NALF) website, which can be viewed at:
https://www.nalfinc.org/cemeteries---athens-maine.html
Picture
Next on my list was the Jewett Cemetery in Madison, on Rt 43 (Horsetail Hill Rd). Two sets of 6th Great Grandparents awaited me there: Henry and Sarah H. (Tuttle) Wyman, and James and Emma (Tarbell) Shattuck. Henry's daughter, Sarah Wyman, would marry Lovell Shattuck, the son of James and Emma.
Picture
Picture
I have written about both of these couples in earlier blogs:
Henry Wyman of Madison, Maine
James Shattuck of Pepperell, MA and Solon, Maine
Slightly north of this location is the South Solon Burial Ground. I have several relatives buried here without stones, including my 2nd Great Grandfather, Charles Leavitt and his parents, Joseph and Lucy Ann (Brown) Leavitt. Charles' wife is here, as are Lucy's parents, Joseph and Lucy A. (Shattuck) Brown.

Alberta A. (Rowell) Leavitt (born Hannah B Steward), her stone being the only one in this plot. Her husband Charles, and maybe even his parents, could be buried in this same plot. If not, they're in this burial ground somewhere. Earlier write-ups:

Joseph Brown of Solon and Athens, Maine
Hannah B Steward, aka Alberta Ann Rowell
Picture
I drove west to get onto Rt 201, taking the road south back to Madison. I made a quick stop at Blackwell Cemetery to see another 27th Maine veteran (George A. Taylor, who also served w/ the 32nd ME). There were two other ancestors that I did need to by-pass, Sarah (Wyman) Shattuck in Solon Village Cemetery, and Thomas Steward in Sunset Cemetery, North Anson, as the day was passing by too quickly, and I REALLY NEEDED to reach that Dunkins in Skowhegan!

My last stop was the Old Bloomfield (or Bloomfield Weston) Cemetery in Skowhegan. The earliest settlers of "Old Canaan" are buried here, the spot where the meeting house once stood.
Picture
One of these early settlers is Mary (Ireland) Steward, wife of Daniel, who died on 30 Jan 1818, aged 79 yrs. After her husband died (he is buried in Fitchburg, MA), she came north to Maine with family.

Not an easy stone to photograph, with there being no sun out that day (well, until I was driving home, which is usually the way it goes). I'll return there again some day, and try for a better shot.

John and Mary are mentioned in my blog on:
Duncan Stewart of Rowley, MA and his Descendants to Maine

That being the last stop of my trip, I headed home. Perhaps the next one will be to Massachusetts, where I know of many ancestors buried there.

Looking forward to Spring!!

James Shattuck, of Pepperell, MA and Solon, Maine

Picture
JAMES SHATTUCK, my 6th Great-Grandfather, was born in Pepperell, Massachusetts on 6 June 1763, the son of James Sr and Phebe (Tucker) Shattuck. He died on 14 Aug 1830, aged 66 yrs, 2 mos, and is buried in the Jewett Cemetery in Madison, Maine.

He was first married to Sybil Tarbell, on 7 Sept 1784 in Pepperell, MA. She died on 27 Jun 1804, and he remarried her sister Amy on 1 Dec 1804. They were the daughters of David and Bathsheba (Woods) Tarbell. I believe "Emma", the name of his wife buried beside him, is probably an alternate spelling for Amy, his second wife.

Some time following the 1810 Pepperell, Mass census, he left for Maine, and settled in the town of Solon.
Picture
Though I currently don't have his earliest land deed in my notes to establish an exact time of arrival in town, on 7 July 1818 [Somerset County Deed, v.9 p.30], he did sell 125 acres in Solon for $500. to a Joseph Tarble of Norridgewock, "where I now live and bought of Joseph Heald". One of the properties Mr Heald had purchased in 1804 [Kennebec Deeds, v.3 p.165] was lot #39, which was the same land that James' son Lovell Shattuck lived on years later. [NOTE: There are quit claim deeds involving his widow and others, so I will edit this entry after I gather more data from the Registry of Deeds.]
Picture

Map on right shows the location of the Jewett Cemetery in Madison, Maine, where James and Amy/Emma Shattuck is buried.
GPS co-ords are :44.890414, -69.792478
Google map (above) shows where highlighted lot from map on left is located in Solon on current map.

Picture
JOSEPH BROWN of Cornville and LUCY A SHATTUCK (aka SHATTOCK) of Solon filed intents to marry on 10 Nov 1845, with certificate to marry issued on 25 Nov '45.

The family lived in Solon, Maine during the 1850 and 1860 censuses, and had removed to Athens, Maine by 1870. He was a farmer. Joseph died in Skowhegan on 20 Nov 1894, according to his Maine death record, though stone says Oct 21st. His age on stone shown as "AE 76 yrs", putting his birth year at circa 1818. His age in the censuses would seem to indicate an 1820-21 birth year. Wife Lucy died in Skowhegan on 23 Mar 1897 [ME death rec], her stone shows 22 March. Her age at death, "AE 66 yrs", is also off, as she was born in 1829, according to Solon VR. They are both buried in the South Solon Village Cemetery.

Picture

(At right) Is death notice for Lucy M(sic) Brown, from the Lewiston Evening Journal, 03/27/1897. Her age on this record is 69 yrs, which differs from her stone by a few years.
